Thousands of fans gathered in the gothic subculture festival ready in the seaside town of Whitby (Whitby Gothic Weekend), which is held twice a year in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The festival is considered one of the most well-established and prestigious Gothic festivals in the world. The first festival was organized in 1994 by Joe Hampshire, who has decided to bring together their pen pals.
Since 1994, the festival has grown into one of the largest gothic musical events in the world, and is now held twice a year.
Whitby was chosen as the venue for the festival because of its connection with the character of Dracula (part of the action vampire Bram Stoker's novel takes place in this city).
