Flies, divers from the United States

In the United States and certain other countries found an unusual family of flies Ephydra hians, which are known for being able to live in extreme conditions. Often these flies live near bodies of water, and these reservoirs can be very salty. One of these reservoirs is Mono Lake in California, where the water three times saltier than the ocean. In Lake live only a few species of crustaceans, planktonic algae and bacteria, which are an ideal source of power for flies.

If the usual flies in the oily water saturated with alkali, quickly sink, Ephydra hians adapted to this. Their body is covered with a large number of hairs with a particular chemical composition that repels water. As a result, the flies manage to dive under the water, saving them the necessary air supply.
